My idea to make our world a little bit more sustainable refers to the aspect of advertising. Everybody knows those little lighters, ballpoint pens or leaflets which are handed out in an election campaign to promote the election candidate. But how could you transform this into a sustainable project?
I have thought about this question for a long time, but I have finally found a sustainable idea.
When these promotional items are being made, a certain carbon footprint is created. The carbon footprint of a specific product can be looked up on the internet. With the carbon footprint you could define what or how many sustainable projects you have to support to compensate for the carbon footprint that is created in the manufacturing process of the promotional items.
For example, the energy consumed in the manufacturing process of a ballpoint pen is as much energy as you need to drive 100 kilometers with a compact car. That means you could calculate the carbon footprint of all the promotional items used in an election campaign and how many kilometers you could drive, with the same energy you needed to produce these items. Then you could set a certain amount of money, which has to be donated to aid agencies, according to the amount of kilometers. Furthermore, you could establish an agency that calculates the carbon footprint and checks whether the conditions are being met or disregarded. This would open a new job field, with more jobs and it would also support aid agencies.
